THE 16th OPERATION COORDINATION UNIT MEETING OF TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE TO PREPARE FLOOD RISK MANAGEMENT PLAN FOR MERİÇ-ERGENE RIVER BASIN HELD

14.02.2024
The 16th Operation Coordination Unit Meeting of the “Technical Assistance to Prepare Flood Risk Management Plan for Meriç-Ergene River Basin” project, financed by the European Union and the Republic of Türkiye within the scope of Environment and Climate Action Sector Operational Programme (IPA-2), was held on February 5, 2024.

Representatives of the General Directorate of Water Management, the Ministry of Environment Urbanization and Climate Change and the contractor company officials attended the meeting chaired by Ms. Afire Sever, Director General of Water Management in the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.

The meeting started with the opening speech of Ms. Afire Sever on behalf of the End Recipient, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Directorate General of Water Management (DGWM). Further on, Project Deputy Team Leader Egemen FIRAT conveyed the current state of the progress in his presentation, including the project activities.

The presentation also covered the work program of the incoming technical experts from overseas, who will be arriving at regular intervals until the end of the project and their contribution to the ongoing work. Ms. Afire Sever emphasized the significance of the current project in terms of adopting modern measures rather than relying on traditional flood mitigation measures—given that such approaches will also shed light on future flood studies. She expressed her confidence in the benefits of exploring innovative approaches together with the incoming experts to urban flood mitigation, including the artificial intelligence implementations in early warning systems.

Following the presentation, a Q&A session was held to exchange ideas on the progress and outputs of the project, including upcoming study visits abroad, mapping studies and modeling outputs. The impact of these processes on the project progress was discussed and a roadmap was drawn for the content of future meetings. The meeting ended after the Q&A session.
