Strategic Environmental Assessment Draft Scoping Consultation Meeting was held

Strategic Environmental Assessment Draft Scoping Consultation Meeting of the “Technical Assistance to Prepare Flood Risk Management Plan for Meriç-Ergene River Basin” project, financed by the European Union and the Republic of Türkiye within the scope of Environment and Climate Action Sector Operational Programme (IPA-2), took place in Edirne on November 13, 2023, with the participation of stakeholders in the basin.
The meeting was chaired by Mr. Maruf Aras, Deputy Director General of Water Management. A total of 51 participants representing various institutions and organizations attended the meeting, including the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Edirne Municipality, General Directorate of State Hydraulic Works, State Hydraulic Works Eleventh Regional Directorate, General Directorate of Forestry, General Directorate of Tekirdağ Water and Sewerage Administration, Edirne Meteorology Directorate, Disaster and Emergency Management Directorate (AFAD), Kırklareli Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry, Tekirdağ Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry, Edirne Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry, Süloğlu Municipality, Lüleburgaz Municipality, Ergene-2 Organized Industrial Zone, Association for Solidarity of Environmental Organizations (ÇEKUD), Turkish Water Institute (SUEN), TEMA Foundation and contractor company officials participated.
The content of the Strategic Environmental Assessment Draft Scoping Report, which covers the possible impacts of floods and planned flood structures in the basin, was shared with stakeholders and opinions were exchanged. The meeting aimed to contribute to the environmental assessment process by prioritizing cooperation and coordination between stakeholders in the process of preparing the flood risk management plan as well as the possible impacts that may occur in the basin.
